Jordan Announces Plans to Pursue SMRs

On May 26, 2018, Jordan stated its plans to replace the $10 billion nuclear power plant with a Small Modular Reactor (SMR). The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and Russia’s Rosatom Overseas announced their agreement to conduct a joint feasibility study for building a Russian-designed SMR in Jordan; the project is expected to consist of a two-unit power plant in the north of Jordan, construction for which would be completed by 2022. According to government officials, SMR technology was chosen due to its safety, limited financial burden compared to the originally planned 1,000 MW reactor, and its ability to be used as a desalination and heating plant.
